Today I was walking one of the dogs that I walk for work. I’ve been walking her daily for a few years now, so we know each other quite well. For instance, I know that on a summer day in July, I know that she doesn’t want to walk. Any day over 65 degrees is not her kind of weather, she is a diva dog for sure. Lately, I’ve begun telling her, “Just do your best.” I said this to her today and then I took a pause and wondered why I don’t give myself the same advice or grace that I give this beautiful golden retriever on a daily basis. How often do we put ourselves down or just get down on ourselves for not handling something the way we would have liked? How often do we say things like, “in hindsight I would have…”? If you are prone to overthinking like myself, the answer is quite often. But why is it that I don’t ever look back at my day and say, “I did my best.” Why are we so hard on ourselves? Why do we always want more? Why are we rarely content? Why can’t todays best be enough? I’ve had a rough go of it over here the past few months, but I’d like to start tell myself, I’m doing the best I can, and that is enough. Will you give yourself that same love and grace today?
