Do you think everything happens for a reason?

I do believe that everything happens for a reason. When we are in the thick of a battle, a struggle, or any kind of mess it is so hard to make sense of that or reconcile with it. I know that my belief in the Lord has helped me to see the truth in that statement, where before I believed I didn’t understand life. Some days I still don’t understand life, but now I know that I am not in control of it all. For example, I miscarried my first pregnancy about 19 years ago. Many people told me that things happen for a reason. I know now and I knew then they said it to bring me comfort, however, in that time of grief, it did not help. Now being on the other side of that trauma and loss, older, wiser, with more life lived, I can see that, though I don’t know the reason, I believe it happened for a reason, that even though it was one of the most heartbreaking moments in my life, God had a plan in it. It makes me think of one of my favorite songs by Rascal Flatts, Bless the Broken Road. “I set out on a narrow way many years ago. Hoping I would find true love along the broken road. But I got lost a time or two, Wiped my brow kept pushing through, I couldn’t see how every sign pointed straight to you. That every long lost dream led me to where you are. Others who broke my heart, they were like northern stars. Pointing me on my way into your loving arms. This much I know is true, That God blessed the broken road that led me straight to you.” I believe that even in the hardest times, everything happens for a reason and that God has a plan in all of it. God doesn’t waste anything.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4
