My fireman and I have done a lot of road trips over the years. The most memorable one would have to be the one we went on December 26, 2020. We left our house in the wee hours of the morning the day after Christmas. This trip was all on me. I was the lone member of our family who was never quarantined during that whole month of December due to Covid-19. All 4 of my boys, hubby included were quarantined for some portion of the month. It was a very hard and very sad December for me, the icing on the cake being when I went to shop for our Christmas tree alone and cried at the lot. Anyway, December 27 was my birthday and all I wanted was to escape our 4 walls that we had been climbing all month and spend my birthday with my dad, my sister and her family in Florida.
So began our road trip from cold and dark Massachusetts to sunny and warm Florida. We weren’t on the road long when the vomiting began. I don’t remember who started first, the child or the dog. No matter though, vomiting persisted for the first 6 hours, alternating between child and dog. Child who struggles with car sickness and perhaps eating too many Christmas goodies the day before and dog from eating a whole batch of chocolate chip pancakes while we opened presents Christmas morning. I was terribly wrong to think that we were in the clear. By the time we reached Maryland, we contemplated turning around and going home. The dog bed was officially shoved into a small trash barrel at a rest stop and we were out of bags for the child to throw up in so I walked into a rest stop and asked if I could have a slushie cup without the slushie and that I would pay for it if I needed to. Hubby and I were at our wits end. I pulled Benadryl out of the glove compartment and placed one in my child’s hand and the other in a scoop of peanut butter for the dog. Please don’t think less of me, but if child and dog were sleeping, maybe their bellies would reset and we could escape the vomit. If I remember correctly, we didn’t have to deal with anymore vomit for the rest of the trip. When we arrived in Florida, late afternoon on my birthday, we breathed a sigh of relief and all took showers. Yes, this was a memorable road trip for sure.
