Happy Monday. We have been hit with quite the snowstorm here in our beachside town. It started snowing yesterday around 10am and with the exception of a few lulls, it’s still going now at almost 9pm on Monday night. My teens were more than pleased with a snow day today and they were gifted another one for tomorrow too. Snowstorms don’t hit this mama’s heart like they used to though. When these boys of mine were small, their little eyes would burst open with wonder and delight at the winter wonderland that awaited them just outside our door. They would excitedly get into their snowsuits, hats, boots, and gloves-we always struggled with those gloves, and they would dive right in. They would make snowmen, snow angels, and snow forts. They would sled down the snowbank that the plow piled up right in the corner of our yard for hours. They would play out there until their faces were red, their hair was dripping, and their fingers and toes ached. They would stay outside until I bribed them inside with promises of hot cocoa overflowing with marshmallows, popcorn, and a movie.
Gone are the days of my kids itching to get out into the snow. Sure, they are helpful. They were out there shoveling last night, and even today, but it’s just not the same. My older two decided to try to sled on boogie boards last night, eventually digging out the snow saucers from the shed to try. That made my heart happy-to know they were out there, together, being kids. If shoveling is what it takes to get them to then switch gears to have a little fun, throw a few snowballs, and chase each other around the yard. I’ll take it. But I miss those days of giggles, red cheeks, and snuggles. For tonight, as a quiet settles over this home of mine, I’ll be sitting here, looking through these old snow photos and holding onto those sweet memories.
